How to Choose Generator Set Size? Feb 22, 2024

When you plan to purchase a generator set for your house or factory, we are facing a question that how to choose the capacity of the generator? It's very easy if follow our steps:

 

1. Determine Your Equipment's Wattage Needs:

Start by identifying all the equipment you plan to power with the generator. Make a comprehensive list and add up the total wattage required. You can usually find this information on the equipment's nameplate or in the manufacturer's specifications. Keep in mind that some equipment may have different starting and running wattages, so ensure you account for any initial surges in power needed to start the load. 

 

2. Convert kW to kVA:

Once you have the total wattage required, you'll need to convert it to kilovolt-amperes (kVA), which is the measure of apparent power. While kilowatts (kW) represent actual power used, generators are rated in kVA. To convert between kW and kVA, you'll need to consider the system's power factor, which indicates its efficiency. International standards typically use a power factor of 0.8, but it's crucial to match the generator's size to your load's actual power needs.

 

3. Define Your Running Requirements:

Determine if your generator will act as a standby backup or as your main power source. For primary power use, it's best to size the generator to run at 70-80% of its rated capacity. This approach prevents the need for maximum load operation over long periods, enhancing performance and extending generator life, and most diesel engine has the best fuel consumption rate at this range. Additionally, this sizing leaves room for future power increases. For instance, if the total power requirement is around 700kW, a 1000kW generator would be ideal, provided it can also handle any peak power surges in the system.

 

 

4. Analyze Site Conditions and Access:

Consider the conditions and location of your site to ensure your power requirements are feasible. Factors like site access, maneuverability, and space limitations can impact generator sizing and delivery. Narrow access roads, steep inclines, or limited onsite space may pose challenges for larger generator models. Assessing these factors beforehand will help determine the most suitable generator size and delivery method for your needs.
