The market for diesel generators in Africa continues to grow rapidly, but unfortunately, so does the number of counterfeit and fake generator sets. Many buyers are attracted by extremely low prices without realizing the risks involved. Recently, we encountered a real case that perfectly illustrates why purchasing a genuine generator is so important.
A few days ago, a customer contacted us for help with a generator that was experiencing repeated shutdowns. According to the user, the generator would automatically shut down after approximately 17 hours of continuous operation.
What surprised us most was that the generator had accumulated only around 300 operating hours since installation. For a quality diesel generator, 300 hours is essentially still in its break-in period and should not be experiencing major failures.
After reviewing the photos provided by the customer, we quickly discovered the root cause of the problem.
At first glance, the generator appeared to be powered by a Perkins engine. The engine carried a Perkins logo and identification stickers. However, upon closer inspection, we found that the engine itself was not manufactured by Perkins.
In other words, the generator was a counterfeit Perkins generator. The supplier had simply attached Perkins branding to another engine in order to sell the generator at a higher price.
Unfortunately, this type of fraud is becoming increasingly common in some markets.
The customer informed us that the generator had been purchased in August of last year and had been in service for less than one year.
However, the canopy already showed severe rust and corrosion. A high-quality generator enclosure should maintain its appearance and structural integrity for many years when properly manufactured and painted.
The excessive rust was another clear indication that the generator was built using low-quality materials and poor manufacturing standards.
Many buyers focus only on the purchase price and choose the cheapest option available. While this may save money initially, it often leads to significantly higher costs in the long run.

The generator failed after only 300 operating hours.
Repair costs quickly started to accumulate.
Downtime affected the user's operations.
The customer lost confidence in the equipment.
By contrast, a genuine and properly manufactured diesel generator can operate reliably for 10,000 hours or more with routine maintenance.
The reality is simple: a cheaper generator may save you money today, but it can cost far more in repairs, downtime, and replacement expenses in the future.
The good news is that buyers do not need to choose between expensive premium brands and low-quality counterfeit products.
